Caron Crochet Texture Message Pocket Shawl 



This shawl is a must-have in everyone's closet! Pair this oversized piece (with pockets, we LOVE pockets) with your favorite pair of leggings and long sleeve tee to elevate any look. Perfect for those Zoom meetings, running errands, etc. If we've learned anything from 2020 fashion, it's that you can be comfortable without sacrificing style.

MATERIALS
Caron Simply Soft Tweeds - Gray Heather Tweeds (9 balls)
Hook: US Size H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge. 
Notions: Yarn/Tapestry needle.

GAUGE
13 sc and 14 rows = 4" [10 cm] 
Save time, check your gauge.


DIRECTIONS:


1st row: (RS). 1 sc in 2nd ch from hook. 1 sc in each ch to end of chain. Turn. 33 sc.

2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
Rep last row until work from beg measures 7" [18 cm], ending on a WS row. 

Final (set-up) row: (RS). Ch 1. 1sc in each of first 3sc.Ch1.Skip next sc.1 sc in each of next 5sc. 
*(1 dcfp around post of next sc 2 rows below) twice. 1 sc in each of next 5 sc. Ch 1. Skip next sc.*1 sc in each of next 5 sc. Rep from *to* once more. 1 sc in each of last 3 sc. Fasten off. 

SHAWL (make 2 pieces alike)
Ch 73. See diagram on page 3.

Set Up Pat: 1st row: (WS). 1 dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as 2 dc). 1 dc in each ch to end of chain. Turn. 71 dc.

2nd row: (RS). Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 2 dc. *(1 dcfp around post of next dc) twice. 1 sc in each of next 5 sts. Ch 1. Skip next st. 1 sc in each of next 5 sts. Rep from * to last 4 dc. (1 dcfp around post of next dc) twice. 1 sc in each of last 2 dc. Turn. 

3rd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each stand ch-1 sp across. Turn. 

Proceed in pat as follows:

1st row: (RS). Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 2 sc. *(1 dcfp around post of next dcfp 2 rows below) twice. 1 sc in each of next 3 sts. Working in front of row, 1 tr in next skipped sc 2 rows below. Skip next st (behind tr). 1 sc in next sc. Ch 1. Skip next sc. 1 sc in next sc. Working in front of row, 1 tr in same skipped sc 2 rows below as last tr. Skip next sc (behind tr). 1 sc in each of next 3 sts. Rep from * last 4 sts. (1 dcfp around post of next dcfp 2 rows below) twice. 1 sc in each of last 2 sc. Turn.

2nd row: Ch 1. 1 sc in each st and ch-1 sp across. Turn.

Rep last 2 rows for pat until work from beg measures 9" [18 cm], ending on a RS row.

Place Pocket Lining: Next row:
(WS). Ch 1. 1 sc in each of first 19sts.Work 1 sc in each of 33 sts from Pocket Lining. Skip next 33 sts of Shawl. 1 sc in each of last 19 sts of Shawl. Turn. 71 sc.
Cont in pat until work from beg measures 31" [79 cm], ending on a WS row. Fasten off. 

FINISHING
Join Shawl Pieces: With RS facing each other, align final rows of Shawl Pieces (center back). With WS facing, join yarn with sl st and work 1 row of sc through both thicknesses to join. Fasten off. 

Front Neck Edging: 1st row: (RS). Join yarn with sl st at lower corner of Right Front and work 189 sc evenly up Right Front and down Left Front. (Note: St number must be an odd number). Turn.

2nd row: Ch 2 (does not count as st here and throughout). 1 dc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 2. 1 dcfp around post of first st. *1 dcbp around post of next st. 1 dcfp around post of next st. Rep from * to end of row. Turn. 

4th row: Ch 2. 1 dcbp around post of first st. *1 dcfp around post of next st. 1 dcbp around post of next st. Rep from * to end of row. Turn. 

5th to 8th rows: As 3rd and 4th rows twice more.

Fasten off. 

Pocket Edging: 1st row: (RS). Join yarn with sl st in first skipped sc of Pocket edge on Shawl. Ch 1. 1 sc in samescasslst. 1scineachofnext 32 sc. Turn. 33 sc.

2nd row: Ch 2 (does not count as st here and throughout). 1 dc in each sc to end of row. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 2. 1 dcfp around post of first st. *1 dcbp around post of next st. 1 dcfp around post of next st. Rep from * to end of row. Turn.

4th row: Ch 2. 1 dcbp around post of first st. *1 dcfp around post of next st. 1 dcbp around post of next st. Rep from * to end of row. Turn. Fasten off.
Sew sides of Pocket Edging in position to Shawl. Sew sides of Pocket Lining in position on WS noting that lower edge of Pocket Lining is approx 2" [5 cm] above lower edge of Shawl.
Fringe: Cut lengths of yarn 14" [35.5 cm] long. Taking 3 strands tog, knot into fringe in every other st across both ends of Shawl. Trim fringe evenly.
